  • Position Summary

Thousands of Florida kids need help getting ready for Kindergarten and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for preschool students.

As a Preschool Literacy Tutor you’ll spend your days helping children ages 3-5 to talk, read, write, sing and play in order to develop early literacy skills and get ready for Kindergarten. Embedded in a classroom, you’ll work closely with a teacher to enhance daily literacy activities and help students build both skills and confidence. With great training and onsite coaching, you’ll be ready to make an impact.

Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the whole school year. We are currently recruiting for the 2019-20 school year. Tutors have the option of beginning in August 2019, September 2019, or January 2020.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Florida Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group of more than 50 Florida tutors, determined to help students be more.

    What to Expect

    • Be the literacy support for a classroom of preschool learners — spend your days helping children play rhyming games, write their names and learn letter sounds.
    • Be the reason students are ready for Kindergarten.
    • Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills.
    • Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback.
    • Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.
    • Be the motivation and represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) to help build awareness of Reading Corps and early literacy.
    • Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.

    Perks Package

Give your time as a tutor and you’ll receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35, 25, or 18 hours per week.

Perks at 35 Hours a Week:

    • Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $445
    • Education Award - $4,266*
    • Federal Student Loan Forbearance & Interest Repayment
    • Individual Health Insurance (premium 100% paid)
    • Child Care Assistance (based on family size and income)

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild or foster child.
